Get Inspired: A Guide to Ceramic Inlay

Inlay is a beautiful decorative technique where different materials are embedded into the surface of your piece. In ceramics, this method has unique characteristics due to how clay behaves during various stages of drying and firing.

You can create contrast using colored clays or experiment with different textures—but always keep in mind how the materials will change during firing.

The technique works on various shapes, though it’s often easiest to begin on smooth, flat surfaces. Start by planning your design, then press our stamps into the clay to create precise impressions.

Next, fill the stamped areas with a prepared clay slip or contrasting body. If working with liquid slip, proceed slowly and carefully:

  • Protect the sharp edges of the impressions.

  • Minimize the risk of cracks as the material dries.

  • Ensure a strong bond without compromising the connection between the two materials.

This is just one of many ways to approach the inlay technique—this is simply how we do it, based on our experience and what works best with our tools.

This process takes patience and practice, but understanding how your materials behave is essential to mastering inlay and pushing the boundaries of your creativity.

The Finishing Process: Patience Makes Perfect

As with most ceramic techniques, rushing can lead to mistakes. We recommend spreading your work over several sessions to allow the clay to reach the perfect consistency—it should be firm without becoming sticky.

When it’s ready, gently scrape away the excess material layer by layer until the final design emerges. For more intricate patterns, precision becomes crucial, as you’ll be working down to fractions of a millimeter.

Final Touches and Creative Possibilities

Once your design is sharp and clean, you can explore additional finishing techniques such as burnishing.

Your creative vision will guide the final steps—whether you choose to glaze the piece or leave it unglazed. Keep in mind that certain slips (engobes) may react differently with specific glazes due to their chemical makeup, leading to unexpected and often beautiful results.

We look forward to seeing the creative pieces you’ll craft with our tools. Happy crafting!
