When Bureaucracy Halts a Shipment - And You Find Another Way
Wrapping a stamp in paper, writing an address somewhere in Ohio or Texas, and feeling the joy of sending honest craftsmanship across the ocean. For a long time, this was one of the best moments of our day. Then came a sudden shift from the shipping carriers. Followed by a fee schedule that defied all common sense.
A 500 CZK (~$21) handling fee. On every single package. Even on a small set worth 250 CZK (~$11).
We faced a choice: multiply our prices, stop shipping to the US entirely or find another way. You know us. Giving up is never an option.
DDP: A System Designed to Protect That Started to Harm
For two years, we shipped to the United States under the DDP - Delivered Duty Paid - regime. For potters on the other side of the Atlantic, this meant only one responsibility: opening the mailbox. Customs, taxes, and paperwork - we handled and paid everything upfront, ensuring no surprise fees at delivery.
It was a service we took pride in.
Then new international regulations hit, and major carriers immediately saw an opportunity. They introduced flat customs clearance fees that have absolutely nothing to do with the shipment's value. That 500 CZK (~$21) clearance fee applies whether you buy a 250 CZK (~$11) set or a shipment worth thousands. And then you add shipping costs on top.
The math is brutal: administrative costs vastly outweigh the value of the tool itself. A system like this crushes small producers exactly like us.
From the Relyef Workshop: How We Felt
Tomáš says: "Our goal has always been to build excellent tools and get them into the hands of potters. But the circumstances made it harder and harder. Small carriers stopped offering these DDP services altogether. I remember the exact moment I opened that fee table from the shippers. I was sitting in the workshop, fresh clay ready on the table, and suddenly I was stuck fighting logistics paperwork. That is not the world we want to work in. So, we decided to change it."
Why the Old System Had to Go - By the Numbers
-
Before: A package leaves Brno. The carrier pockets a 500 CZK (~$21) clearance fee, charges for shipping, and tacks on an unpredictable fuel surcharge or other hidden fees. The potter in the US waits 7–14 days, praying the box doesn't get stuck in customs.
-
Now: A massive consolidated pallet shipment flies straight to an Amazon logistics center. All customs administration is cleared at once at our expense. A potter in Oregon gets their package within two days- zero extra fees, zero stress.
That 500 CZK (~$21) fee? Completely gone.
Amazon USA: Our Smart Bypass
We refused to let bureaucracy stop us. Instead of hundreds of tiny packages, each dragged down by nonsensical fees, we now send large, consolidated pallet shipments directly to US Amazon fulfillment centers. We handle the logistics, customs duties, and bulk import all at once, entirely out of our own pocket.
The result for you as a potter in the US: you order on your local Amazon, and the tools are at your studio the next day. No hidden fees.
The First Batch Has Landed
We are thrilled to share that our very first major shipment has successfully arrived at the US fulfillment center. The Top 10 set featuring our most requested tools, including the iconic Courier Alphabet Stamps, is fully stocked and ready to ship.
More specialized sets are crossing the ocean right now.

This is how we ship our orders via Amazon.
